Description david 2008-11-13 23:22:19 UTC
GIMP is quite an extensive software with a lot of tools and commands to keep in mind and I often find myself serching for tools or commands I've been using but forgot where they were.
Here a search tool would be great, just put in a searchword and the tool searches in tool-names and tool descriptions etc. and you are presented a list of matching commands/tools and where you can find them.

This tool could also work as an translator (Not sure if this would actually work.), put in a tool name and get pointed to where that tool is and what it's called in your language. Great if you follow english tutorials and your Gimp is using swedish or spanish for example.

A good placement of this tool would be the help-menu.

Autodesk Maya has a search function like this. It has saved me a lot of time and is very useful.

Please do not file enhancement requests without prior discussion on the gimp-developer mailing-list. We don't have enough developer resources to cope with all the incomplete enhancement requests that are filed here. Any new features should be discussed and if we can come up with a full specification, then an enhancement request can be filed here.

What you suggest has even been a Google Summer of Code project this summer. Unfortunately it was not completed successfully.

Well, sorry for not knowing your procedures. I'm just trying to help. I thought this was the proper way.
I do not want to add myself to a mailing list just to suggest a feature.

Hi,

I come across this feature request and realize this is the same as a feature which has very recently been added to the dev repository. We now have a search, on the '/' shortcut by default (also available in the help menu indeed), which does exactly what you want: searching tools, commands, etc. Basically it search any "action" (more or less = a command which you can assign a shortcut too).

It will be available in GIMP 2.10. Enjoy! :-)
