I discovered this using a bluetooth mouse that 'sleeps'.

Each time it's going to sleep, xorg disconnects the input device (I suppose) and, upon reconnect, the setting of left-handness is not present anymore.

I suppose using a normal mouse an plugging it out and then back in would render the same results
