Description Mesar Hameed 2008-10-14 23:08:43 UTC
Please describe the problem:
first noticed it when i was installing ibex (yet again), the install did not tell me how it was progressing (every 10 seconds).
Once installed, changed the interval to 1 second and created a large file on desktop, and opened nautilus, and copied and pasted the file.
we hear, "file operations frame, cancel button" and the progress is not indicated.
installed from ibex live 20081014 iso, have not updated orca to trunk to see if there is any diffrence.

Does this happen every time?

After you start the large download, please try enabling flat review and reviewing the progress bar. Having done so (and thus "tickling" the hierarchy), does the progress bar speak updates as expected?
Comment 2 Mesar Hameed 2008-10-15 08:51:18 UTC
yes, after "tickling", the announcements come back, but each window (or frame) that has the progress bar has to be tickled individually.

We just talked about this - the installer is a known problem. But, we are seeing progressbar updates being spoken for nautilus. Can you update to the latest Intrepid and see if this still exists for you?
Comment 4 Mesar Hameed 2008-11-26 23:04:25 UTC
Yes, sorry, updated intrepid still needs tickling before progress bars are spoken.
Comment 5 Willie Walker 2009-01-21 15:27:11 UTC
Mike is reporting that this seems to be working for him. Jon, are you still seeing this issue? If so, do you have a really good reproducable test case we can run on an installed system?
Comment 6 Mesar Hameed 2009-02-03 20:40:27 UTC
Sorry for the delay.

0. change the progress bar announcements to once a second.
1. open gnome-terminal
cd ~/Desktop
# warning this will create a file that is 960M
dd if=/dev/zero of=zeros.null bs=16M count=60
2. leave gnome terminal open, ctrl+alt+d to get to desktop
navigate down to zeros.null, ctrl+c, followed by ctrl+v
the copying window will appear, and orca will say "file operations frame, cancel button."
it does not announce the progress.

3. alt tab to the opened gnome-terminal, and let it focus.
4. alt+tab back to the file operations frame,.
Orca still does not announce any progress.

As soon as we perform any flat reviewing function, the announcements will start speaking.

I will eventually get round to testing if this is the same with a freshly installed ibex, although I have tried hard not to clutter up this machine.

Comment 7 Willie Walker 2009-02-09 17:31:04 UTC
The problem is that we are not getting the appropriate events to present the information. Blocking this on bug #571062. We could hack around this problem by drilling down the hierarchy from the top when the window opens, but that's an ugly and potentially expensive hack. So, for now, you need to flat review in order for the notifications to appear.
Comment 8 Mesar Hameed 2012-08-18 08:02:37 UTC
using debian wheezy, and the nautilus test, the problem still exists.
Its even worse, because now we cant seem to flat review the dialogue, to trigger orca to dig down the hierarchy.
