Description Saulius Menkevičius 2008-10-11 09:36:41 UTC
Dunno if this is a metacity's problem or that of empathy, but i get this everytime.

Basically what it appears to be with this one is that window position is not saved when contact list window is hidden, and next time it gets shown it is (re)positioned by metacity to upper left corner, below the caption bar of the previous active window. As the usual position for this window for me is left side of the screen, this is annoying (i.e. before empathy i had been using pidgin which did the right thing w.r.t. this).

Confirm on Fedora Rawhide:

empathy-2.24.0-1.fc10.x86_64
metacity-2.24.0-2.fc10.x86_64
compiz-0.7.6-11.fc10.x86_64

Same problem with Compiz.

+1 Confirm on Ubuntu Intrepid beta with Metacity.
Comment 3 Alexander Hunziker 2009-03-04 13:04:59 UTC
Information from the corresponding bug on Launchpad, which may be useful:

Empathy remembers the window position just fine after startup. Problems seem to appear after one of the accounts disconnected for some reason.
Comment 4 Dusan Maliarik 2009-05-19 10:09:38 UTC
I can confirm this on Ubuntu jaunty, empathy 2.26.1, and it is pretty annoying. Thanks for fixing this in the current stable 2.26 release. That would be really great
Comment 5 Dusan Maliarik 2009-05-22 09:15:20 UTC
Still there in 2.27.1.1
Comment 6 Xavier Claessens 2009-05-22 09:24:32 UTC
This is most probably a WM bug.
Comment 7 Dusan Maliarik 2009-05-22 09:32:24 UTC
You shouldn't be expecting WM to save window the position for you
Comment 8 Xavier Claessens 2009-05-22 09:40:25 UTC
The WM must restore the position, and metacity does most of the time. But sometimes it doesn't. This is a WM bug, I'm 99% sure.

tbh, I'm sick of all applications doing different work arounds for each WM.
