Description Charles 2008-10-03 13:38:21 UTC
Please describe the problem:
http://gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.6.html
->Toolbox and Docks are Utility windows
My toolbox and layers windows are not always on top based on the default settings under preferences->window management. I changed it to "Keep above" for both toolbox and other docks, and restarted gimp with the same problem.

Steps to reproduce:
1. install GIMP on Windows XP SP3
2. start GIMP
3. Click on Image window and toolbox and layers windows fall behind the image window.
4. goto preferences->window management and change both toolbox and other docks to "keep above".
5. restart gimp
6. Same issue as step 3.

Actual results:
doesn't function as documented
http://gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.6.html
->Toolbox and Docks are Utility windows

Expected results:
to function as documented
http://gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.6.html
->Toolbox and Docks are Utility windows

Does this happen every time?
yes

The release notes explain that this only works on the GNOME desktop. It is well-known that the window hints are not implemented on the Windows platform.

Release Notes:
Under -> "Toolbox and Docks are Utility windows"
I don't see where it explains this as a "GNOME only feature". Can you please provide a link to your source? I also recommend updating the release notes section I provided with that additional info as well, to avoid confusion.

You need to look closer then:

Known Problems

  * The Utility window hint is currently only known to work well in the
    Linux GNOME desktop environment.

Once again I'll reiterate. "I also recommend updating the release notes
'section' I provided with that additional info as well, to avoid confusion." This is misleading, which is obvious because I'm not the only person with this observation. If I wanted to read the small print to learn about this issue, I would have read the whole damn thing. I appreciate the dick headed comments however as I'm sure you can tell.
