mobile-broadband and vpn are not tango style icons

Furthermore wired, wireless and dsl are all the same icon.

the wired/wireless/dsl thing is because your icon theme probably uses the same icon for the aliases that NM uses...  If you look at the icons in /usr/share/icons/gnome/status/ you'll see that the following 3 are all the same icon:

nm-adhoc.png
nm-device-wired.png
nm-device-wireless.png
