Evolution showing negative number of unread messages

Distribution: Ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid)
Gnome Release: 2.24.0 2008-09-22 (Ubuntu)
BugBuddy Version: 2.24.0
Comment 1 André Klapper 2008-09-23 15:06:38 UTC
Which EXACT version of Evolution is this?
Where exactly is this displayed?
A bit more description would be helpful.
Comment 2 Srinivasa Ragavan 2008-09-23 15:22:01 UTC
Alan, is it vfolder or normal folder. Is it on the folder tree or on the info-label above the folder tree.
Comment 3 Srinivasa Ragavan 2008-09-23 15:25:23 UTC
Also, does it goes off on restart or persistent. Any steps that helped you get it again?
Comment 4 Alan Pope 2008-09-23 15:40:26 UTC
Apologies for the lack of detail. I clicked the wrong link in help and ended up
with a GNOME bug when I was expecting a launchpad bug.

I have now done that, so would you like detail here or on that bug?
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/272189

In answer to your questions 2.24.0-0ubuntu1 is the package version of Evolution
I am using, and this was when viewing an IMAP inbox on a remote host. I'll
attach a screenshot.

Hard to reproduce this..
Comment 6 Srinivasa Ragavan 2008-09-23 16:34:04 UTC
So a normal folder. It must go off on restart, which type account IMAP/Exchange/NNtp ?

I understand, most of the obvious ones we had fixed, but some hard to find issues are still lying around. Just try, if you can recall the steps or a pattern, it could be just useful
Comment 7 Srinivasa Ragavan 2008-09-26 03:22:28 UTC
Again: which type account IMAP/Exchange/NNtp ? :-)
Comment 8 Alan Pope 2008-10-10 13:34:09 UTC
Not sure what you want me to say Srinivasa. In comment 3 I clearly stated it was an IMAP inbox.

I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 and also encounter this problem.

Evolution's about menu reports version 2.24.1

apt-cache policy evolution reports:
evolution:
  Installed: 2.24.1-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2.24.1-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.24.1-0ubuntu2 0
        500 http://free.nchc.org.tw intrepid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I'm going to attach a screenshot.

Also, I wonder if it could be related to bug #405677. As you will see in the screenshot, the combo box by the "Show:" label is huge. If I click on it, it seems that there is a translation problem with the message label names.

Another example of the problem.

Hmm... my display was wrong when I submitted this. Please ignore. (And the password listed there is bogus in case someone would want to try it.)

Screenshot showing negative number of unread messages

Evolution: 2.24.2
OS: Ubuntu 8.10 (GNOME 2.24.1)
Mail Box: Local (POP).

I also see odd values for the number of Unread messages, sometimes negative, in search folders.

Erroneous number of messages in folder

Evolution: 2.24.2
OS: Ubuntu 8.10 (GNOME 2.24.1)
Mail Box: Local (POP).

I also see non-zero values for the message count in a search folder when there are no messages in the folder.
Comment 18 Matt McCutchen 2009-01-16 01:10:45 UTC
Some issues with incorrect unread counts are being addressed in bug 557348.
Comment 19 Akhil Laddha 2009-12-08 08:55:37 UTC
Can you please check again whether this issue still happens in Evolution 2.26
or 2.28 and update this report by adding a comment and changing the "Version"
field? Thanks a lot.

Again thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed
for the version you originally used here.

Without feedback this report will be closed as INCOMPLETE in 6 weeks.

Comment 23 Milan Crha 2010-03-25 18:47:14 UTC
I believe it's much harder to reproduce a negative unread count on 2.30.0+, but it's still possible to get a miscount of unread messages on the folder. The negative number is just one case of it, I believe.
Comment 24 gareth.glaccum 2010-11-29 13:19:57 UTC
I believe I am seeing the same issue. It was a new install F14, but I used the backup feature to copy the data from an older version of evolution/OS.
Initially after the upgrade, the Unread search filter showed in bold "Unread (1)", and didn't budge for around 3 weeks.
Today, I renamed this search filter, and created a new "Unread" item (Status of all local and remote mail boxes, is not read). This is never in bold, even when emails arrive. However, what appears to happen, is that with /every/ email that I mark as read, whilst this search filter is 'open' (i.e. it is the open folder), then it subtracts 1 from the total shown.

Name : evolution Relocations: (not relocatable)
Version : 2.32.1 Vendor: Fedora Project
Release : 1.fc14 Build Date: Tue 16 Nov 2010 05:41:00 GMT
Install Date: Mon 29 Nov 2010 11:07:38 GMT Build Host: x86-10.phx2.fedoraproject.org

Currently I am showing -8 in unread
Comment 25 Milan Crha 2010-11-29 15:43:54 UTC
The search folder thinks it's in sync with the summary, thus only adds/subtracts respective counts. There was some fixes before 2.32.1, which you have, which may work as expected when you remove your local cache for search folders, as it is out of date. It's in ~/.local/share/evolution/mail/vfolder/folders.db file.

Downstream bug report about the same from 2.91.6:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=681106
Comment 27 André Klapper 2012-06-26 16:08:56 UTC
Is this still an issue in 3.4.2 or 3.2.3?
Comment 28 Milan Crha 2016-02-22 11:40:30 UTC
I didn't see any reports about this for a long time (several months-years), thus I'm closing this in favour of 3.18.x.
