GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 552744
Workspace switcher doesnt allow adding workspaces on a second X server
Last modified: 2009-05-31 11:49:31 UTC
Please describe the problem: The workspace-switcher deskbar applet does not allow adding workspaces on a second X server (separate monitor). I have have two monitors, and I have setup two separate X servers (using nvidia-settings, Xinerama is off) so each monitor has its own workspaces. On the first monitor (:0), the workspace-switcher applet works as expected, but on the second monitor (:1), I cannot add workspaces. Ubuntu defaults to 2 workspaces, and whenever I change the number of workspaces on monitor 2 (:1), it changes the number of workspaces on monitor 1 (:0). I have Compiz enabled on an nVidia FX 5500 (if that matters). Steps to reproduce: 1. Get two x servers running on two monitors using nvidia-settings, without Xinerama. 2. Enable Compiz (easy to do on Ubuntu Hardy Heron), and the desktop cube. 3. Attempt to add/remove workspace on second monitor (:1) (using workspace-switcher on that monitor/x server). Actual results: The number of workspaces on the first monitor (:0) is changed. Expected results: The number of workspaces on the second monitor should be changed. Does this happen every time? Yes. Other information: I have an nVidia FX 5500, if that matters.
If it will help solve the bug, this report has already been submitted (by a different user) to Launchpad, here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/110899/
I think the number of workspaces is a general window manager setting, which is not specific to screens in X (at least in Metacity). See also bug #441658. The original Launchpad bug describes a different issue.
