GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 550885
Ctrl-L irrevocably clears my conversation window
Last modified: 2016-07-22 02:13:36 UTC
From time to time, I accidentally hit Ctrl-L, which clears my scrollback. This is kind of annoying, since there's no way to get it back. I can close and reopen the conversation window, but that only gives me a single page of scrollback. Ideally, Empathy would behave similarly to the terminal: Ctrl-L blanks the current window, but you can still scroll up to see the old stuff. Failing that, an undo mechanism would suffice.
Make sense.
Actually is that "clear window" command useful at all?
I don't think it's useful at all.
I think the use case is "talking about buying someone a birthday present and they suddenly appear at your shoulder", or more lurid variations thereof.
I don't that this is the way to meet that use case. 1) You can just close the tab. If you reopen the conversation later, the history will be there. 2) An empty window will look suspicious. 3) New messages that you might not want visible can appear in that window anyway.
I think this feature is fairly useful. The only use case I have actually used it in though is this: I want to show Daf a problem in Empathy and to make things simple and clear I blank the history to show exactly where the conversation started. I personally don't think this is a bug, but Will's suggestion of mimicking the terminal is neat.
