Description Nick Jenkins 2008-09-04 11:32:51 UTC
Looking for a way to have the Ubuntu login screen "remember" the last logged in username, so that I just have to press enter to reuse the last login name, and then it goes straight to the password prompt.

Under system->administration->login window, I currently have it set to show the list of users, so I can click on my full name. Ideally though, I would like the username to be prefilled, and just have to press enter, and then type my password, without using the mouse.

I.e. I am fine with my username being disclosed to anyone who walks up to the login screen, but I still want to have to authenticate myself with a password. I could not see a way to do this, and some Google searches (e.g. "Ubuntu login screen remember username") did not turn up anything that looked applicable, other than this similar request: http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread47878.html

This should already be good to go in gdm 2.22 and later.

the list of users is sorted by frequency, so the focus should be such that you just have to press enter.

This wasn't true in gdm 2.20, though.

Thank you, that sounds great. I'm currently running GDM 2.20.8 in Ubuntu 8.10, but hopefully GDM 2.22 will make it into the next distro release, and I'm looking forward to using it. Thank you once again!
