Description phil 2008-08-31 21:00:05 UTC
Please describe the problem:
This is kind of a mix of a UI bug report and feature request. Re-file as you like!

Evince offers the option to print multiple document pages on a single page. It also offers the option to print only odd and even pages. The latter option exists (I presume) so that people without duplex printers can do their own duplex printing by printing the odd pages first, then feeding the printed material back in the other way up and printing the even pages.

If this presumption is correct, the combination of these two options, does not give the expected result: Trying to print a document 2-up and odd only (followed by even only), prints the pages

  1/3 5/7 9/11 then 2/4 6/8 10/24

Now, intuitively, based on my expectation that odd/even printing was for the purposes of duplex printing by hand, I had expected the print order to be

1/2 5/6 9/10 then 3/4 7/8 11/12

instead, which actually results in a useful document consisting of odd then even printed pages, made up of muliple sequential pages of the source document.

As it stands, the ability to combine multiple document pages per printed page with odd or even-only printing appears to be fairly useless for the purposes of created a 2-sided document.

Steps to reproduce:
Select multiple pages per document, and even or odd pages only at the same time.

Actual results:
I get odd pages from the source document only.

Expected results:
I'd like odd pages from the print document only, so that I can create a useful 2-sided document from a non-duplex printer.

Does this happen every time?
yup!

Other information:
If the ability to only print odd or even pages is required for other reasons, perhaps some UI work could be done to allow my preferred behaviour? As it is I'll be going to back to my lash-up of pstops command lines for the moment.

cheers, Phil

as a workaround you can create a new pdf with your page setup (in the example above with 2 pages per site). this can be done with the "print to file" option in the print dialog. with this pdf you can do what you wanna.
