GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 549059
Germany locations
Last modified: 2021-06-09 21:03:11 UTC
The two cities Muenster and Osnabrueck in Germany are about ~50km apart and located in different states (Muenster is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, while Osnabrueck is located in Lower Saxony). But in the libgweather location database they share an entry called "Muenster/Osnabrueck" put into North Rhine-Westphalia; probably due to the fact that they share an airport. For users from Osnabrueck it is rather irritating that they can't find their city in the Lower Saxony list, but in the North Rhine-Westphalia list. That's why I suggest that the Muenster/Osnabrueck entry should be split into two different entries, one for each state.
In 2.24, it appears as "Münster" only. For 2.26 we want to go through and make sure that all major cities are represented, so we should fix this then. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Germany_with_more_than_100,000_inhabitants
Please see http://live.gnome.org/LibGWeather/ImprovingLocations to see what information is needed to improve libgweather's coverage of Germany.

Hm. This bug has been set to NEEDINFO for quite some time now. As I can't see any open question, I am reopening.
the open question is comment #2
Sorry, I'm not really sure about what I need to do. 'Improving libgweather Locations' states that data/Locations.xml.in in SVN is the data source, but on the next line it says that I 'cannot simply submit a patch to data/Locations.xml.in' because it 'is generated from other data'. Although it promises to explain how to do it instead, it never does. Do I now have to edit major-cities.txt? Or do I have to edit Locations.xml.in after all?
"If major cities are missing, they can be added by editing data/major-cities.txt in the source tree... You can then submit your fixes either by doing a svn diff, or by just pasting the additional data in the bug report." However, also, "Please do not: ... ask us to add cities without also looking for cities to remove (as discussed below in "Getting Rid of Junk")", and the Getting Rid of Junk section says "We haven't yet figured out how this data will be automatically incorporated into libgweather yet, so the best way to provide this currently is to just give us a list of the affected cities, and what they should be merged with / renamed to / removed."

I add the duplicate with the city of Mainz and now I read this improvement bug. I'd like to update the list for Germany as I am living here. I thought to do one federal state after the other. When I complete the list, can I just copy in this bug report or shall I use a new one?
Created attachment 136960 [details] Major cities of Germany Major cities of Germany (more than 100,000 inhabitants or state capital) and locations that are not major cities and therefore not necessary
Hi! As proposed I created a file with the major cities of Germany following the example of the instructions. For each major city I added the coordinates and if it is already included in the list or not. I also wrote a list for the small unnecessary locations with a comment, why they are unnecessary, mostly because are are too small. I would like to know if my work is useful for the project and if it is formally correct. If it is useful I would like to continue by doing the same with France. Daniel
Hey Daniel, it probably is useful :) Thank you very much! Dan, could you review the data in attachment 136960 [details]? TIA!
This bug is also being tracked on Ubuntu at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgweather/+bug/382372 Thanks!
Bielefeld is missing
Bayreuth is missing. I know that it's below 100K people but it's hosting the bavarian regional administration of upper franconia and an university which should allow an exception from that rule. And for people linving in the area around coburg the next available cities are Nürrnberg, Würzburg or Hof which are all at least 100 kilometers away which makes using their weather data almost useless.
