Linear volume controls tend to have little effect when operating on the upper end of the percentage scale. This means that 1% change in the top end of the volume control is inaudible however a 1% change at the bottom end of a volume control is massive.

By using a logarithm for the volume controls the volume will decrease linearly to the ear, so a 1% change at either end of the scale will result in the same change in the dB output.

That's not something we want to reimplement in every application. Pulseaudio already does that, so we're just waiting for playbin2 to be used so totem modifies the Pulse stream volume directly.
