Description David Price 2008-07-12 21:44:54 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Orca does not speak or indicate in braille the message status symbols when focus moves to a new message in the Thunderbird message list. The exception to this is that the "unread" symbol is announced or indicated in Braille. However, symbols indicating "read", "replied", "forwarded", etc. should also be announced or indicated.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start Orca.
2. Start Thunderbird.
3. Move focus to message list.
4. Move focus to different messages in the message list with different status symbols.

Actual results:
If the message is new, the symbol "unread" is spoken after the contents of the subject are spoken. However, if the message has been read, forwarded, replied to, etc., orca says nothing about the symbol between the subject and the sender.

Expected results:
Orca should announce/indicate in Braille the status for each message.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

We currently speak the following states if displayed:

* Starred
* Unread
* Has attachment
* Junk status (as a number between 0 and 100)

We do this because these states are indicated in table cells whose name reflects the graphic being displayed.

In the case of forwarded and replied to, there is not a dedicated table cell. Instead, a little graphic/icon appears at the start of the table cell which contains the subject. This object is not being exposed to us so we have no way of knowing that it is there -- or what its state might be should we get suspicious and go looking for it. I've opened a Mozilla bug for this issue: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=448235

As for speaking "read" -- when a message is no longer unread, the cell that contains "unread" contains nothing (as opposed to "read"). This is the same as Evolution. Also, I believe Mike decided that we only care about the read status if a message is unread; not read. If we want to always speak the read status, that will require special handling. Mike?

Changing the status of this bug to blocked.

If all of the other states are spoken, I'm happy with read not being indicated. I'm just used to hearing it because it is the behavior in the various Windows mail clients that I have used.

Thanks!

Changing target to FUTURE as we have little control over the bugs which block us.

using orca 2.27.4pre and thunderbird 3.0b3pre, I can hear collapsed and expanded too.

the bug we're blocking is waiting for input, maybe want to respond?
Comment 6 Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2013-01-09 22:44:40 UTC
I just pinged the Mozilla bug.

Tracking bugs for which we have nothing to do in Orca seems to clutter up our bugzilla making it harder to locate stuff we can be working on in Orca. Plus, we have an Orca tracker here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=374212

Thus I'm closing this one as NOTGNOME.
