GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 541047
Totem Mozilla plugin only plays low bitrate stream
Last modified: 2011-08-11 12:53:08 UTC
Please describe the problem: On the DR (Danish national radio) net radio, there is a choice between three bitrates. However, the Totem Mozilla plugin always plays the low bitrate version. The MPlayer Mozilla plugin is able to play the high bitrate version. Steps to reproduce: 1. Go to http://netradio.dr.dk/content.asp?station=3& 3. Click on 'Høj' under 'Lydkvalitet' for the high bitrate stream Actual results: Poor audio quality and ~4 KiB/s network usage observed in gnome-system-monitor. Expected results: Good quality and ~16 KiB/s bitrate as obtained using the MPlayer plugin. Does this happen every time? Yes Other information:
Works fine here... Which totem backend are you using? Gstreamer or xine-lib?

That seemed to make the difference. I am using the Gstreamer backend (default in Ubuntu). I just tried again, but on my laptop (while filing the bug I was on my office PC) I can't even get the stream to play in the browser plugin. However it does play in Totem using the attached playlist file. This still only provides the low bitrate (32 kbit/s) stream. After switching to the xine backend, both Totem and the browser plugin plays the high bitrate stream fine. I would prefer that it worked for the Gstreamer backend, though.
As it works fine here, I'll say that it's probably a bug in GStreamer.
Yes, that seems to be the case. The problem also appears in Rhythmbox. Is there any way, I can find out which gstreamer plugin this bug belongs to?
The problem remains in Ubuntu Jaunty with the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.11-2ubuntu1 Is the bug addressed correctly now?
The link in comment 2 plays fine here in Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" with gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.19-1~ppa10.04+1
Created attachment 164287 [details] Playlist in m3u format I just upgraded to gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.19-1~ppa10.04+1 from the kalon33 PPA to test. The file plays in Totem as it always have, but the same problem remains: Totem plays a stream with a bitrate of 32 kbit/s, which can be observed by the lousy quality and by watching the network download rate in gnome-system-monitor hovering around 4 KiB/s. If the referred to stream address "http://wmscr1.dr.dk/e02ch03m?wmcontentbitrate=300000" is opened in VLC instead, the download rate is around 16 KiB/s, and the quality is better (though not fantastic). The asx file is from a link that advertises a 128 kbit/s stream. The attached file is a playlist in m3u format which opens in both programs and shows the problem: Totem plays 32 kbit/s stream, while VLC plays 128 kbit/s stream.
Which network speed did you select in the preferences?
It's on Intranet/LAN in Totem's settings.
Works fine here too with the latest releases... can someone still reproduce it?
Well, I just tried again, and yes it finally works. I get the 128 kbit/s stream in Totem with the Gstreamer backend now using the default installation of Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal". It did NOT work for me before with the version referred to in comment 7 (i.e. it plays, but low bitrate).
Is work fine, can we close the report?
then if work, can we close this report? <- Sebastian, what you say?
