I would like to be able to save register view filter settings so that, for
example, reconciled transactions are not displayed by default. Ideally this
would be available on a per-account or global basis.

Gnucash is a fantastic program and I will be donating to the project
as soon as I figure out how to  :o).

Would it suffice if that information was saved as information in ~/.gnucash/books/$file as meta information to opened registers?  That would mean that registers reopened automatically on file load would filter the same way they filtered before.

Not really. I would prefer that it applied to all accounts
(whether auto or manually opened) and that setting be saved with other
preferences. Ideally it could be set on a per account basis or globally.

If that's not feasible:

If the filter could be set for each account per session ( i.e. not, as
now, only while account is open) 

or 

set globally and not saved,
that would be an improvement (IMHO).
