every time I enable the feather option on the selection tool and try to
switch to the paint bucket to fill in the area i selected Gimp crashed and
dissappears.  Switching to other tools works, and switching to paint bucket
from selection tool works when feather is disabled.

I've just tried repeating this, and I don't see the behaviour
you describe.

Please can you give us a step-by-step recipie for repeating your
bug?  Right from starting gimp, telling us whether you use the
mouse or keyboard to do things, etc.  Tell us what happens along
the way, and how this differs from what you expected.

Closing this old bug.  This was probably a duplicate of bug #55735,
due to the infamous bug in the Mandrake GTK+ theme.
