GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 537035
Location bar in Firefox 3.0B5 no longer speaks.
Last modified: 2008-06-25 22:38:53 UTC
Please describe the problem: With Orca trunk as of yesterday, the address bar in Firefox 3.0B5 no longer provides speech feedback. Specifically, I can't hear text I input or erase, nor can I hear text as I arrow past. This worked fine a few days ago, so appears to be a recent regression. Steps to reproduce: 1. 2. 3. 1. Launch Firefox 3.0B5. 2. Launch Orca. 3. Focus Firefox and press CTRL-L. 4. Enter an address and arrow around. Actual results: The entered text isn't spoken or reviewed when arrows are pressed. Expected results: The text should be read when entered or reviewed. Does this happen every time? Yes Other information:
It looks like we're not always getting caret-moved events (verified both in Orca and without Orca using Accerciser's event monitor). I'll keep investigating. Thanks!
Nolan, I confirmed that we're not getting them in the 3.0 that ships with Ubuntu currently, but we are getting them (and speaking them as expected) for the current nightly trunk of Firefox. So it seems the bug is Mozilla's (absence of the events we need to speak the correct thing) and it looks like it might be fixed. Therefore, could you please do a couple of things: 1. Copy and paste the exact build you are using (from the contents of the About dialog). For example: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1a1pre) Gecko/2008060602 Minefield/3.1a1pre Also, if you happen to know of a recent 3.0 build where this wasn't an issue, having that will be handy too. 2. Try the latest Firefox trunk build and see if that solves the problem for you? Thanks!
More data: I just downloaded and installed 3.0RC2 (released on the 29th it appears). In this version, the caret-moved events are present and we're speaking the contents of Location bar when I arrow around. The build I have which came as part of Ubuntu has a build date of the 23rd. So Nolan if you don't want to take the 3.1 plunge quite yet, please give the current FF release candidate a try and see if that solves it for you. Thanks again!
The plot thickens. I waited a few days before responding to this so I could see the behavior several times. I switched to RC2, and that did seem to fix the problem. However, after about a day of use I lost the functionality again and edits/moves stopped speaking. Strangely, when I try restarting orca or firefox I can't make the bug go away. This seems to happen under B5 as well, though admittedly the RC seemed to play nicer with speech, so I'll probably use that more regularly. I may also try nightly builds in the next day or so and report back on that. If you can tell me how to cut-and-paste from a dialog then I'll report build numbers, though if you're using B5 and RC2 then you've got the same builds I do.
Nolan, today was the 3.0 release. Could you please see if that version fixes it for you?
Because this is a Mozilla bug and because it does not seem to exist in the released 3.0 or the pre-release 3.1a builds, I'm going to go ahead and close this out as NOTGNOME.
