Description Roger Dettmer 2008-05-24 11:05:37 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I'm running Ubuntu 8.04, I've a uvc compliant webcam, a Quickcam Pro 9000. Video output is set to "xvimagesink", and default video output is 'X Window System (X11/XShm/Xv)'.

When I start Cheese, the application starts up, but with no image, the activity light on my camera lights up, then after a few seconds the light goes off, and the Cheese window remains black. Incidentally, the video test in Skype works

Steps to reproduce:
1. Happens every time I start Cheese
2.
3.

Actual results:
See above

Expected results:
I'd expect my image to appear in the Cheese window

Does this happen every time?
Yes

Other information:
There's a way I can get Cheese to 'sort of work' -it involves starting cheese, and then, just after the activity light goes off, clicking one one of the Cheese menu button, e.g. Help. This sometimes makes the light come on again, and I get an image in the Cheese window. It's a nice clear sharp image, the only problem is there's a time delay of around one second before the screen image responds to events in the real world. I've tried to correct this last fault, hence the "xvimagesink" setting, but it doesn't work

could you paste the output of cheese -v ?

thanks!

Some new developments. I'm finding that Cheese starts about one go in

Hope this helps.

Even when it does start, the response of the image is very slow - about
one second. I've noticed that the resolution of the cheese image is
1600x1200. With guvcview, which works pretty well, I'm using a
resolution of 352x288 and the response is much better.

Is there a way to control the image size in Cheese?

Bugzilla's all a bit new to me, but can anyone explain how this is 'resolved'? I've looked at the duplicate bug, not sure it helps me, and Cheese still isn't working on my system.

Marking it as a duplicate of bug 523475 as a duplicate was a mistake. That's clearly another bug. I'm reopening this bug.

Can you try running cheese from SVN. There you have the option to set the resolution
Comment 7 Roger Dettmer 2008-06-14 10:29:00 UTC
Sorry, never heard of svn before. Still it's now installed on my machine, but I've no idea of how I would run cheese from SVN. Tell me what to do, and I'll give it a try.

Comment 8 Jaap A. Haitsma 2008-06-14 12:28:44 UTC
svn is a version control system [1]

Here you can find instructions how to get the latest cheese version from svn [2]

After you checked it out you need to compile the code.

Comment 9 Roger Dettmer 2008-06-14 14:57:09 UTC
Hm..I'm a fairly unsophisticated Ubuntu user, rather committed to the idea that I shouldn't have to be compiling source code in order to get standard applications to work. I see the latest version is 2.22.2, and Hardy offers 2.22.1. I think I'll wait until 2.22.2 appears as an update.

Hopefully, all will then be well.
