Description David Prieto 2008-05-12 09:41:53 UTC
Hi,

I think that being able to assign different colours for different activities would help check not just how much time you have spent working, but HOW you have spent it.

Please see the attached mockup. In it, each activity has a colour. Activities A and B belong to Category A, so with just a glance you can see what part of the time devoted to Cat.A was devoted to Act.A, and What to Act.B.

Also, with a glance at the week view you can see not only how long you worked that day but also how much of it you gave to activities A, B or C.

Hi David!

Thank you for the mockup.
I was thinking about inviting color codes to categories, and that would clash with this solution. But it could be that simple color-coding in graphs would do the job as well!

Currently we are showing max 12 tasks per period, the rest being grouped into "others", so building up 12 color palette would be necessary. 12 colors is quite a lot, considering all color blindness, but let's see what we can do there :)

Well, I guess giving colours to categories should be more than enough. After all, if you placed two activities inside the same category that means there are no big differences between them. That would be OK with me.

New mockup

I made a new mockup just to see how category-colouring would look like.

to avoid triggering epileptic seizures, having colors only in the top graph, and some kind of legend, should be enough, i think :)

Do you plan on letting the user choose what colour they want a specific category to be? If so, I think that colour should appear everywhere, not to confuse the user.

If the colour is going to be chosen automatically, though, then I think it would be OK to just show it in the top graph. It really depends on how much importance you want to give to the colours.

Ok, read and googled some Tufte again (a lovely chap, you will agree), so this is how it's gonna be (pitty that i returned to hacking hamster, just a day before UI freeze :) )

Instead of 3 graphs, let's do just two.
First and main one will be time spent by interval, multibar per category.
At end of graph we will have single bar, that shows totals per category. Pretty much we will be adopting ideas from this mint theme[1].
The other graph will be totals per activity for the interval, as it is right now.

Also will remove border from the graphs, and tuftitize some more, but will try to keep the animation.
Static scroll[2] might be the coolest feature ever, but will have to think about that.

Main question is "when" - well, some time soon, unless i decide to quit drinking cofee again (not a good idea, really).

commited to trunk (unstable), so the crowd will see these improvements in 9 month or so! :)
