Kevin, have you been able to test this against the latest stable version of Banshee? I'm using a newer 5G model as well, and syncing is working as expected (with the exception of playlists, but Bug 560970 should fix that).

I may have misread/misinterpreted your report. Perhaps you were saying that Banshee fails to read and display the 5G database when it was written by iTunes. It's been awhile since I've used iTunes, but I think I remember that being true. If I'm not mistaken, I think Rhythmbox was able to read it, even though Banshee couldn't.

May 2008 (Banshee 0.99.1) was kind of a long time ago. Kevin, have you tried this with a newer version of Banshee? There's a chance it works now. Otherwise, I'll probably re-format my 5.5-gen iPod using iTunes to test this out.

Either way, this is hardly a "major" issue. Once the user rebuilds their iPod database with Banshee, there are no problems. This issue only exists the first time the user plugs in their iPod (or if they're trying to use their iPod with both Banshee and iTunes - which isn't recommended), and I doubt a large portion of Banshee users are 5.5-gen iPod users.

Really this is more like an enhancement, but because it works with other Linux music players (namely Rhythmbox), it could arguably be considered a bug in Banshee. I'm changing the severity to "minor" and marking this as NEEDINFO until either Kevin or I (or another 5.5-gen iPod user) have the chance to test against a more recent Banshee release.

I just restored my 5.5-gen iPod using iTunes, added some tracks in iTunes, and plugged it into my Ubuntu computer. Rhythmbox could read the database, but Banshee said that the database was too new and offered to rebuild it for me.

So, this is still an issue, and while it's not a big problem, fixing it could help Linux newcomers transfer their music collections to their new operating system.

Fixed with 1.7.5 and higher. Thanks!
