ok did the online network update using method discribed
here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades#head
378718bf27e85b8e05c7a5966125eb194b5f26bb

Press Alt-F2 and type update-manager --devel-release
and yes my version of 7.10 was fully uptodate

now what is intesting an ibm t42 on which i did a clean install from cd works fine ,
also no joy if boot up pc with an ethernet cable plugged in

I am quite happy to do a install from cd and blat the hard disk if this is a good option ?.

thanks

now it is getting screwey

today same laptop on a driffrent wireless network and evoultion was working sending and reciveing. Out of intrest plugged in a lan cable into the same network , once network manager had sorted out connection stuff , yet again could not send /recive

so reverted back to the wireless connection which was working and still could not send email.

it is as if evolution has not acknoledged the return of a valid ethernet connection is there a service that needs a restart ?.
