GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 528149
meaningless option
Last modified: 2011-11-18 23:36:41 UTC
The preference dialog contains a totally cryptic "Solaris mode" checkbox. Reading the gconf schema, one learns that the alternative to Solaris mode is "Irix mode"... Really, the label should probably be something like "divide cpu usage by number of cpus". It is still a useless option, but at least people would have a chance to understand what it does.
ok, the label is not perfect for beginners and it's undocumented but it's a very useful option on SMP.
Created attachment 201509 [details] [review] Proposed patch The interface does not display Solaris mode checkbox in the preferences dialog, it does have a user-friendly description of the checkbox in 3.2.1, but the help still had a reference to the Solaris mode, so I have attached a patch to fix it, and the bug can be set to Fixed, as all references to Solaris mode have been updated. Also removed the tooltip from the checkbox ("Solaris mode"), to be consistent with the other preference checkboxes (none of them have tooltips) and as the label is descriptive and user-friendly enough alone.
Thanks. Patch applied to master. I'd added the tooltip because some people seemed to care but I agree that's for a by-gone age.
