GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 522270
NCB lies, makes me angry, then feel stupid
Last modified: 2008-12-05 14:38:47 UTC
I have a box of DVD+-RW disks with "4.7GB" written on them in big letters. I'm backing up my photos and add directories until I reach the capacity of the disk. When I press the Write button in the cluebar n-c-b says I have 4.5GiB to burn. I start the burn and then get told that my disk doesn't have enough space on it. Cursed with a little knowledge, I am aware that ISO 9660 file systems cap out at 4.1GB so at first I think this is the problem. Later testing with manual commands reveals that the problem is actually 1000 vs 1024. NCB's UI should really use the units which are used by the companies who write numbers on the disk, to avoid user's getting angry and calling GNOME stupid.
Or at least say "disc isn't big enough for 4.5GiB of data (4.8 GB)", or something. And we should probably always turn on UDF support when writing to DVDs.
The definition of GB varies between different types of media. Hardware and media vendors lie and are inconsistent. We have no way of knowing if the packaging uses binary system or not, unfortunately.
For example: 700 MB (80 min) CD-R disc = 700 MiB 4.7 GB DVD-R disc = 4.3 GiB
