Hi, Daniel. Are you a native English speaker? If so, could you help me with that?

Just list here the right sentences and I'll fix it in trunk, for next version.

Thank you.
Comment 2 Daniel Nylander 2008-03-12 14:58:02 UTC
Sorry, I'm not a native English speaker.
Maybe someone over at gnome-l10n mailing list can read and suggest some changes.

I saw in the documentation that you used "inform" instead of "enter" (when it comes to typing in information, such as username and password).
Comment 3 Jonh Wendell 2008-03-12 15:34:59 UTC
OK, I'll do that near the string freeze for 2.24. After all, I'll add lots of new strings in this cycle. Thank you.

Hi.

I'm a native English speaker (London) and am willing to spend a couple of hours translating some strings for you over the next couple of weeks. How many pieces of text need fixing? Orders of magnitude is fine :)

I can also write passable American ;)

Is there just a resource file I need to edit or are they hard-coded?

Comment 5 Jonh Wendell 2008-03-26 21:00:13 UTC
Hi, Julian. Thanks for your help.

All the strings are hard coded, but you don't need to touch then. All you need is to use the program and find any term that doesn't sound good in English, and then write here your suggestions.

But don't do this now, once we can add/remove/change many strings as we are in the development period. Wait until July, please.

Thanks Jonh. If you need any "quick fixes" in the meantime feel free to email them to me. I won't guarantee a timely response (esp. at weekends), but I'll have a go if I'm around.

Hi. Can some of you (Julian?) review the English of Vinagre?

You can run the program (in its svn version) or you can take a look at the messages file: http://l10n.gnome.org/POT/vinagre.HEAD/vinagre.HEAD.pot

If you find some error, please, point it out here in this bug so that I can fix it.

Thanks.

On the advice of bug #541246, here's a report:

../data/vinagre.schemas.in.h:6
msgid""
"When connecting to a host, the client can say to the server to leave others "
"clients connected or to drop the existent connections. Set the value to true "
"to share the desktop with the others clients."

Should be "other clients" on lines 1 and 3.

#: ../src/vinagre-bookmarks.c:92
msgid""
"Copying the bookmarks file to the new location. This operation is supposed "
"to run only once."

May be better as "This operation is only supposed to run once".

#: ../src/vinagre-bookmarks.c:420
msgid "Confirm removal?"

If this is a title of a window, it ought not to have a question mark, as this isn't a question.

#: ../src/vinagre-ui.h:41
msgid "Connect into a remote machine"

and

#: ../src/vinagre-ui.h:49
msgid "Connect into this machine"

Should be "Connect to this machine"

#: ../src/vinagre-ui.h:96
msgid "Disable mouse and keyboard activities"

Could be "Disable mouse and keyboard".

Thanks, Bruce. I just committed your suggestions.

I'll let this bug open until we reach string freeze.

Hi, if you have some suggestions, please write them here now. Thanks.

msgid ""
"When connecting to a host, the client can say to the server to leave other "
"clients connected or to drop the existent connections. Set the value to true "
"to share the desktop with the other clients."

Might be a bit informal, especially the "say" bit.

Other than that, I think it's fine.

Hi. Sorry for not helping recently - new baby girl :)

I've got a question about this text:

#: ../data/vinagre.schemas.in.h:6
msgid ""
"When connecting to a host, the client can say to the server to leave other "
"clients connected or to drop the existent connections. Set the value to true "
"to share the desktop with the other clients."

Does this option make the server drop *all* existing connections, or just the ones coming from this client/IP/user?

e.g.
Alice and Bob are both connected to server.remotehost.tld (alice0)(bob0)

Bob tries to open a new connection to server.remotehost.tld (bob1)

What happens to Alice's alice0 connection? What happens to Bob's bob0 connection?

My suggestions:

if alice0 && bob0 will be dropped by server when bob1 connects:

"Force remote server to drop all other users' connections. Select this option if you wish to share your desktop with other clients."

if alice0 will not be dropped and bob0 will be dropped by server when bob1 connects:

"Force remote server to drop all other connections from this machine. Select this option if you wish to share your desktop with other clients."

or if the server only drops other connections from my user, as opposed to the machine/IP address, whatever... :

"Force remote server to drop all my other connections. Select this option if you wish to share your desktop with other clients."

HTH
