Perhaps dupe of 507865?  When the report fails the first time (and gnuCash doesn't crash), go to Options, Display and remove %e from "Today's Date Format"

Could you try the workaround suggested in comment 1? Even if it doesn't fix the problem, it will at least eliminate one possible source.
