GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 517639
ctrl+c and ctrl+x don't work while typeahead box is visible
Last modified: 2012-08-14 23:07:14 UTC
Please describe the problem: If I'm in Nautilus using only the keyboard to navigate, I start typing a file's name, and the matching file is highlighted (and presumably selected). If I then press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, what I previously had copied is pasted, instead of the file that was just selected. Steps to reproduce: Actual results: Expected results: Does this happen every time? Other information:
I experienced this on both Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10. There's also a bug report on Launchpad if anyone can add thoughts to it there https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/465284
+1 Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit running on a Vostro 1510. This is quite an annoying problem.
I'm experiencing the same problem. When I'm pressing the key for a whole second it works fine, but if I "just" press it, it may randomly work or not. This only seems to occur in nautilus.
See also Bug 137455, reported 6 years ago.
Still using Dell Vostro 1510. This problem occurs with Lucid Lynx too. I am now in the habit of holding control and tapping C/X a number of times to ensure that something actually happens (one day I may break my keyboard). I can't believe that this is still unconfirmed - it's the single most frustrating thing about using Ubuntu!
+1 Ubuntu 10.04 Asus G50VT Had this problem with QWERTY and Dvorak
(In reply to comment #1) > I experienced this on both Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10. There's also a bug report on > Launchpad if anyone can add thoughts to it there > https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/465284 I think the original report describes a different bug: "If I'm in Nautilus using only the keyboard to navigate, I start typing a file's name, and the matching file is highlighted (and presumably selected). If I then press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, what I previously had copied is pasted, instead of the file that was just selected." IOW, the interactive search widget has the focus, and captures the cut/copy/paste signals; the search text, not the selected file, is copied. The launchpat bug instead reads: "I've always had the problem but it's annoying me more and more - when I want to copy/cut a file I can't just hit Ctrl+C/X because half the time it won't actually copy/cut the file: nothing is added to the clipboard. Thus I have to hit the command several times in a row just to make sure it's registered that I'm trying to copy something. I can't count the number of times I've had to come back to the file I was trying to copy having pasted thin air." which doesn't mention the typeahead box at all. I think this is a separate bug -- i.e., nautilus sometimes doesn't catch clipboard operations. (I have experienced both things, FWIW.) Subsequent comments seem to about the latter bug. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Mmm, actually the original bug report is a bit ambiguous, I may after all be wrong... Sorry for the noise.
But the typeahead box is mentioned in the title...
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes for the version that you use. By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME. Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer version of GNOME.
