GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 516651
cheese .desktop file doesn't comply with gnome hig
Last modified: 2008-04-02 03:16:42 UTC
Currently, the cheese .desktop file doesn't follow gnome hig - specifically, the requirement to include a functional description in the menu name (http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/desktop-integration.html#menu-item-names) Quoting from the hig: "Include a functional description in the menu name In the menu item name, include a description of functionality in addition to the proper name of the application. This is especially useful novice users, and to users of systems where numerous applications are installed by default. Users are more likely to find your application if the name that appears in the menu includes a description of its functionality. For example, user testing of MIT's Athena system revealed that users had difficulty finding the file manager because they were unfamiliar with the name "Nautilus". Because users did not associate the word "Nautilus" with the concept "file manager" the menu item did not help them. This is an example of not using the user's language. See the section called “Create a Match Between Your Application and the Real World” for more on this topic. Example 2.1. Including functional description in menu names Original menu item Revised menu item Epiphany Epiphany Web Browser" So, my suggestion is to change the name in the .desktop file to something like "Cheese Webcam Utility" (or preferably something snappier - sounding, but I can't think of any nicer suggestions!) Other information:
this bug depends on bug #512091. i will resolve it, if i get the confirmation of the i18n team.
There's no short functional description worth going with. "A few applications, particularly games, do not have appropriate functional descriptions (but note that many games do). In this case, use Application Name as the menu name." Cheese falls in the same category as Gnometris, etc.
cheese _would_ have a functional description, e.g. webcam tool, webcam utility, tool to take photos and videos, .. the problem is just, that they dont fit
i will close that bug until the discussion on ddl about application names in the menu is finished and brings up some results
