Please describe the problem:

Also affectes to 2.20.4

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have an extremely large folder of newly done images
2. From terminal call eog filename.jpg
3. eog main window is opened after a lot of time 

I had a folder with ~100 wallpapers (~120 kb each one), I have reproduced this bug creating a folder copying these wallpapers sometimes until reach 3416 files (~1.4 GB)

Would be nice have this fixed
