Description Matevž Jekovec 2008-01-31 14:32:17 UTC
There is a functionality in CS series of Adobe Photoshop which allows you to set the final width and/or height of the cropped image.

This is usually used, if you have a series of images (eg. your employee photos for ID cards or your site) in various resolutions and you wish to crop and resize these images to a fixed size 150x300 px.

Currently, you have to crop every image (and use fixed aspect ratio to keep the correct ratio) and then manually resize the image to 150x300 px.

This feature would merge these two operations so you'd only crop the image and already get the correct image size (150x300 px in our case). This would save quite some time when editing 100 photos.

If you have suggestions for new features or changes, please don't use the bug-tracker for that but propose them on the gimp-developer mailing-list. A bug report should only be opened after we have discussed the changes and decided that we want to see them implemented.
Comment 2 Ilya 2009-02-18 11:47:56 UTC
I want to see this feature very much too. It is one of the best things ever made in Photoshop

You can set the final size by checking the checkbox "Fixed" and then selecting "Size" in the combobox.

I suggest also marking this enhancement bug as "Fixed" =)
Comment 5 Martin Nordholts 2010-08-16 16:10:13 UTC
"Fixed: Size" will only set the source size, not the target size. We should keep this enhancement request open.
Comment 6 Tilo 2015-01-01 19:02:08 UTC
Seems to be an old topic but as far as I can see still valid. Very useful in Photoshop and should not be too difficult to realize. I'm new to GIMP but already missing it a lot.
Comment 7 Michael Natterer 2015-01-04 00:01:37 UTC
I don't know what is missing here. The "Fixed" toggle allows to
set a desired aspect, width, height and size, which is exactly what
the reporter asked for.
Comment 8 Michael Schumacher 2015-01-04 00:38:13 UTC
Some other applications offer the following in one step:
"crop this x*y pixel area, and then scale it to make it x'*y' pixels".

Has the potential for getting a bit more complex UI-wise.
Comment 9 Tilo 2015-01-04 06:15:27 UTC
Here is again what I want: I enter a target size of, let's say, 150 x 100 pixels. When I dreaw the selection, this could be ANY size but would already be forced to the ratio of 1:1.5 as the target output is. When I hit enter the image will be cropped AND resized to 150 x 100 pixels.
It is amazing how people who know the feature of PS love it and want it and everybody else just refuses to understand what we are talking abaout. I can only say: Find a running copy of PS and TRY IT!
Comment 10 Michael Natterer 2015-01-04 13:32:47 UTC
So what exactly is the difference between what you describe and setting
GIMP's crop tool options to "fixed: size 150x100"?
Comment 11 Michael Natterer 2015-01-04 13:33:57 UTC
You say "crop AND resize". Maybe you simply need to uncheck the
"current layer only" toggle?
Comment 12 Tilo 2015-01-04 15:40:51 UTC
No. You are not duplicating what we mean. I'll try again to get across what we want:
I have a large picture. Crop tool. I need only part of the pic and I need that only thumbnail size 100 x 100, let's say. So I put 100 x 100 in the size box. Then I draw my selection which can be any size, but is restriced to 100:100 aspect ratio. Let's say the part of the original pic I need is 550 x 550. I hit Enter. The pic is cropped to the desired area (550 x 550) AND immediately resized to the final result of 100 x 100.
Of course that can be done with Crop and then Resize, but if you need small images for web pages a lot that is just too much work.
I think this feature is not even difficult to put in, but I'm using GIMP barely a week now and not up to trying this with script-fu myself.
Comment 13 Michael Schumacher 2015-01-04 18:02:11 UTC
Please note that "resize" has a very specific meaning in GIMP - it will only change the size of the canvas or a layer boundary without affecting the image or layer content.

This could be what you want - but this means that you want a 400*600 pixel layer with only 123*234 pixel of content in it somewhere, the rest being the background color or transparent. My impression was that this functionality implies *scaling* the image and or/layer content.
Comment 14 Tilo 2015-01-04 18:15:19 UTC
Sorry, of course I mean scaling.
Comment 15 Tilo 2015-01-04 18:24:44 UTC
I have to translate everthing from PS-speak into GIMP and sometimes just don't think about it.
