GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 50944
Taskbar should display icon names instead of window titles
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Package: gnome-applets Severity: normal Version: 1.2.4 Synopsis: Taskbar should display icon names instead of window titles Class: change-request Distribution: Red Hat Linux release 7.0 (Guinness) System: Linux 2.4.1 i686 unknown C library: glibc-2.2-12 C compiler: 2.96 glib: 1.2.8 GTK+: 1.2.8 ORBit: ORBit 0.5.6 gnome-libs: gnome-libs 1.2.11 libxml: 1.8.10 gnome-print: gnome-print-0.25-8_helix_1 gnome-core: gnome-core 1.2.4 Description: I'd like to suggest changing the taskbar to display icon names (WM_ICON_NAME) rather than window titles (WM_NAME). That would seem more ICCCM compatible. Often both names are the same but sometimes not: e.g. xconsole, which is often kept iconified, appends an asterisk to its icon name when new text is printed to the console. ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-02-16 08:27 ------- The original reporter (tkorvola@iki.fi) of this bug does not have an account here. Moving matches for [Tt][Aa][Ss][Kk].*[Ll] to gnome-applets/tasklist
How do you feel about this anders?
moving to libwnck. can I safely say this should be won't fix?? It would make the WLA pretty useless
It prefers _NET_WM_NAME in any case, the new _NET hints don't distinguish icon name from title. I think we should not change this; it's important that the name of the task button match what's in the titlebar, that's a more important UI concern than having a "short" name for the icon.
