Description lexual 2008-01-11 00:55:24 UTC
Tried to move the following folder from /home ext3 to my mp3 player which is FAT.

"NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Podcast | PBS".

I get this error message:

Error "Invalid parameters" while moving "/home/lexhi...cast | PBS".
Would you like to continue?
<skip> <cancel> <retry>

Retry is highlighted as default.

Guessing the issue is with "|" in filename on FAT.
nautilus should have a much better error message. nautilus shouldn't have retry as the default action in above error message.

I think nautilus should have an error message like:

"You are trying to copy onto a FAT filesystem which doesn't support "|" in the filenames."

It should then either: offer to change filename so copy will work, advise user to rename and try again.

Lex.

I can reproduce it on nautilus 3.6, but with a different error dialog:

> .
> / \ Error while copying “NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Podcast | PBS”.
> / ! \
> /_____\ There was an error copying the file into /run/media/antonio/FAT.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
