Description Asa Zernik 2008-01-01 11:26:24 UTC
When importing amounts of music to rhythmbox, whenever the filename produced by my preferred rule is invalid, such as every song with a title containing a question mark (?) or colon (:), import for that file simply fails, instead of automatically going for the workaround of substituting characters (such as underscores or spaces) for any "invalid" title segments.

Other information:
This is an especially major bug as long as file attribute editing is unavailable for ipods; the way things currently are, if I want to import, say, "Is Anybody Out There?" from my 'pod, I can't even change the name to make it importable.

Can you give some examples of these filenames? When rhythmbox says 'invalid filename', it means a filename that is not a valid utf8 string or is not valid in the encoding specified by the G_FILENAME_ENCODING environment variable. Unless you're doing something really weird, question marks and colons won't make any difference at all.

****/Pink Floyd/The Wall (Disc 1)/Pink Floyd (The Wall (Disc 1)) - 01 - In the Flesh?.mp3

Pink Floyd/The Wall (Disc 2)/Pink Floyd (The Wall (Disc 2)) - 02 - Is There Anybody Out There?.mp3

Other songs in that album without problematic characters worked fine.

שלישיית גשר הירקון/תפוח הזהב/שלישיית גשר הירקון (תפוח הזהב) - 07 - הורה ביל"ו***.m4a

(that last one didn't display properly with left-right encoding - שלישיית גשר הירקון (תפוח הזהב) - 07 - הורה ביל"ו is the filename, הורה ביל"ו is the song title)

Again, all songs in that album (all with hebrew names) imported, but the one with quotations marks in the title gave an error.

The actual error message is "Could not open file "foo/bar.foo" for writing".

What sort of filesystem are you using? If it's fat-based, how did you get those files on there?

rhythmbox shouldn't be trying to write to the files you're importing.
Comment 4 Asa Zernik 2008-01-01 12:49:21 UTC
Importing from an ipod (vfat) to a fat32 partition (readable by both linux and my windows setup).

The files were put onto the ipod in itunes.

Also, just a note, when rhythmbox gives the "Could not write" error, it's to the new copy of the file on the hard drive fat32 partition, not to the original on the ipod - it's just trying to create a file to write to.
Comment 5 Jonathan Matthew 2008-01-01 12:59:14 UTC
Oh. I was assuming that by 'importing' you meant the process of adding files already on the local filesystem to the rhythmbox library (and that's what the 'importing' component is for), rather than transferring from a device.

You should be able to work around this by setting the /apps/rhythmbox/library_strip_chars flag in gconf to 'true'.

Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find.
