It happens that you have to render Pango markup within some restricted, rectangular area (see #339540 for instance). Currently PangoLayout provides only rudimentary support for that scenario, so to handle that situation you have to use clipping boxes, or manually iterate over all visible lines. In both situations it is hard to provide visual overflow indication.

Stupid Bugzilla!!! I searched for "pango_layout_set_height", before opening this bug, but Bug 469313 didn't show up! Seems Bugzilla search is seriously broken? Sabotage?
