GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 503013
add "Ignore Thread" and "Mark Thread Read" capabilities
Last modified: 2008-10-16 16:40:42 UTC
"Ignore Thread" should cause reading the next unread message to skip messages in ignored threads until all the unignored threads have been read. "Mark Thread Read" should mark all messages in a thread as read.
the "Mark Thread Read" request is a duplicate. you can easily do this by pressing control+h and then control+k. i don't see any use of the first one. how should it be indicated that you want to ignore a thread? how can you un-ignore a thread?
(In reply to comment #1) > i don't see any use of the first one. how should it be indicated that you want > to ignore a thread? Via a menu item or keystroke. > how can you un-ignore a thread? Via the same (or a similar) menu item or keystroke. As for the questions you *didn't* ask, the ignored thread would be greyed out, and the unread count in the folders pane would be only the unignored count, perhaps with the ignored count in grey after.
"Ignore Thread" would be very useful for high traffic lists. It will allow reader to not pay attention to new posts in threads already marked as ignored. Even "Skip Thread (mark thread read and move to next unread)" would be useful. Now it needs 3 steps with 3 keypresses per thread: Select whole thread (Ctrl+H), mark selected as read (Ctrl+K), move to next unread (Ctrl+]).
And even "Ignore all threads by default, if I am not participating in them" as folder property would be useful. It is a typical way to read high traffic mailing lists for projects I am not involved in, but I am sending patches there.
