GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 500081
Thumbnailers inconsistently create drop shadows
Last modified: 2008-03-17 23:21:50 UTC
It seems that the PDF and JPEG thumbnailers seem to generate a black border and drop-shadow around the thumbnail image, whereas the PNG and GIMP thumbnailers do not. Can we change our thumbnailers to not include a border or a drop shadow, and just add a shadow in Nautilus instead? I think this is a better approach, as it allows us to do funky things like raise the offset of the shadow when icons are dragged to give a better sense of picking something up. Alternatively, we should just make sure that all thumbnailers are adding the same style of border. This is tricky, because if we want to get this right, we essentially have to match the icon theme (think about the different shadow perspectives for Tango vs. Human). Perhaps an icon theming engine would be useful, so that you can programmatically add drop shadows to a 2D image in a manner that matches the current theme. Cheers! Alex

I vaguely recall that images with alpha channels do not get drop shadows... but I can't find the relevant bug report right now. - Mike
This is fixed now in 2.22, closing. Please refer to bug #512905 for thumbnails handling discussion, thanks!
That bug is to do with blurry thumbnails and restoring the previous behaviour. I've been told to open a new bug about the issue I raised, so I'm going to have to reopen this one if the old behaviour is restored.
Alexander, I found out that this bug was already reported as bug #338632 (with many users CC-d on it), so I'm closing this as a duplicate of that (you will be automatically CC-ed on that bug), which I'll close as OBSOLETE too. Feel free to reopen that bug (or file a new one) if the old behaviour will be restored, thanks!
