Description petrosyan 2007-11-27 18:34:38 UTC
Right now "Start" button does not do anything in GNOME. It would be only logical to bind it to the "Main Menu". Right now "Main Menu" is bound to "Alt+F1" keyboard shortcut.

The menu key is actually defined by metacity, so that's where any defaults need to be set as well.

Reporter: What is "Start" button? A keyboard button? What does it look like? I don't have a key on my keyboard that says "Start"; is it just some keyboards?
Comment 3 petrosyan 2007-11-28 20:53:27 UTC
It is the "Win" key. The key which has windows logo, but can also have any other logo, and is present almost on any keyboard.

So, is this a duplicate of bug 164831, or not?
Comment 5 petrosyan 2007-11-28 23:18:24 UTC
I don't think so.
This bug is about binding "Win" key to "Main Menu" _by default_.
Comment 6 Martin Meyer 2007-11-28 23:32:59 UTC
Isn't the win key a modifier key like alt, ctrl, meta, etc? Can such a key be used for a shortcut by itself? If so, is it even a good idea? What are the HIG implications, if any?

I happen to have liked that Windows used the win key to activate various shortcuts that are mainly things originating on the start menu, like "run" and "explore". Gnome has other keypresses for most of the same things though.

If we uses "win" to actvate the menu:
1) could other menu applets like gimmie and main-menu somehow register to get the shortcut event?
2) would we want to have any other shortcuts use the win modifier key rather than their current key? (i.e. win+d shows desktop, win+r opens run dialog)
3) are there any applications that won't like losing the win key?
4) can we ship users little gnome feet stickers to put over the win logo? :-P
