GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 498840
Information about a missing codec is inadequate for fixing the problem
Last modified: 2007-11-21 21:57:32 UTC
Link the "codec wizard" from Totem to Rhythmbox Other information: When Rhythmbox encounters a stream it cannot decode (or a file, I'd guess) it just tells you: "You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins." It can be quite difficult to tell what the missing codec would be, especially from a network stream. In Totem this has been solved nicely. In the same situation it offers to run a codec search: "Search for suitable codec? The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable codecs to play media files. Do you want to search for a codec that supports the selected file? The search will also include software which is not officially supported." In the case of my stream it returned two suggested packages, ran apt-get to install them for me - and started playing! Way cool Totem! So how about copying this feature from the Totem to Rhythmbox - to make it even nicer to use! And put an end to all the whining and guessing how to get this or that radio to play.
We just added this a couple of weeks ago. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 338308 ***
