Description Robert Dinah 2007-11-13 01:49:10 UTC
Steps to reproduce:
1. Install application
2. Start application
3. Wait an eternity as it does not start

Stack trace:
Windows XP - up-to-date on IBM T60 notebook. Even after a reboot after installation ... which appeared to happen flawlessly ... there is no data in any of the logs. Even a command line batch file launch produces no results ... command line shows everything runs up to start command after which the beast evaporates into the unknown.

I found the reason for this problem. On my machine, for some reason or another, if I even create a folder in the C:\Documents and Settings\My_User directory with the Windows Explorer ... I create a folder that is not accessible. Therefore this is not a problem with your software, but a problem with my machine ... corruption or a registry setting that is mis-set. I have no issues on any other part of the file structure. I'll try to either resolve this on a Windows forum or rebuild my notebook from scratch. Now you know why I've become a converted Linux user ... damn Windows ...

Thanks for your help! I hope you've not been pulling out your hair on this bug. Best to you all!

I have another IBM notebook handy and I can create a directory that is accessible. That machine is a T41 that has recently had its hard disk rebuilt. So I'm not sure whether this ... or the other duplicate bugs ... are the same reason.

Test for every person submitting this type of bug is to create a folder in the C:\Documents and Settings\My_User directory ... if it is not accessible then the user has a problem on his machine and not the installation software.

Understand though ... that programs are normally added to C:\Program Files and user settings in C:\Documents and Settings\My_User\Application Data directory ... where it belongs ... not directly in the C:\Documents and Settings\My_User\ directory. Check it out ... even on a normal computer that has had software added and removed for years ... there are NO folders created under the C:\Documents and Settings\My_User\ directory directly. It seems that GnuCash and Gimp both have this issue ... placing Application Data in the wrong place.

Fix is bring up C:\Documents and Settings\ in Windows Explorer ... right click on My_User folder ... click on Sharing and Security... ... click Security tab ... click Allow Full Control box ... press OK ... after a few minutes ... problem gone.
