GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 489260
Window List on Vertical Panel with Default Width Does Not Display Icons, Only Shows Two Dots ".."
Last modified: 2007-11-13 10:16:37 UTC
Please describe the problem: When I use the Window List on a vertically oriented panel, on the right side of the screen, all I see is two dots for each button for an open window. The panel size has to be changed to at least 30 pixels wide for the proper icons for different applications to display. The default size for the panel, is 25 pixels. So when first installing Ubuntu 7.10 (or also in OpenSuse 10.3) and moving the panel to the right side, buttons for windows only show the two dots, like this: ".." The dots are a partial dispaly of the ellipsis that would show, if some but not all of the text in a button could appear. As a result, if the panel width is less than 30 pixels, all buttons for open windows appear the same, making them useless, since you can't tell which button represents which window. This behavior did not exist for me in Ubuntu 7.04, which had an older version of Gnome (I don't remember the version number). In Ubuntu 7.04 with the panel at a 25 pixel width, the icons for each different application appeared in the Window List buttons. Steps to reproduce: 1. Move panel with Windows List applet to right side of screen. 2. Leave panel width set at default 25 pixel width. 3. Open a couple windows in different applications. Actual results: All buttons will only display two dots (e.g. ".."). Expected results: I would expect to see the icons for each different application. It would be even better if the buttons were oriented so that text would display vertically, rather than horizontally. (Or at least that should be an option.) Does this happen every time? Yes.
