Description Christopher Monahan 2007-10-16 08:58:00 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Previously I was able to place the window list on the the right hand side vertically, and it would expand to fill the panel, now it doesn't expand as new windows are opened, and only ever fills up about a quarter of the space.

Not only that, but if i have a large number of windows open at once, it causes the panel to freeze and start burning CPU, the only way to stop this is to close some windows and type "killall gnome-panel". This happens without bug-buddy or apport being in any way involved and i don't know how to go about getting a stack trace.

Steps to reproduce:
1.Open default gnome desktop
2.Place the bottom panel vertically on the left or right
3.Open some windows
3.Open loads of windows

Actual results:
Firstly the window list is squashed up into a quarter of the panel, and when you open loads of windows the panel freezes, showing a grey (theme coloured) rectangle in the center of the vertical panel, the system slows to a snails pace and the CPU monitor applet shows furious activity.

Expected results:

Does this happen every time?
yes

Other information:
This may be dependent on OS - ubuntu 7.10

This is a gnome 2.20 bug because I can reproduce it in both Ubuntu 7.10 and OpenSUSE 10.3.

To reproduce this bug, the panel width must be about 30 px to show windows icons. If the panel is narrow (and only dots are shown instead of icons), the bug will not show.

It is possible to open only 7 windows on my desktop until the vertical positioned panel freezes.

I don't think this bug is a duplicate of 86382 (which does not describe the memory leak described here).

It's a duplicate of http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=511994 .
