Description Ben FrantzDale 2001-09-10 01:18:26 UTC
It would be cinsistent with the X clipboard tradition of selections going into
the clipboard. This would be particularly usefull in conjunction with a
terminal. Sometimes one wants to run a command on many files that have little in
common. It would be great to be able to select the files in Nautilus and then
just middle click into the terminal.

I'm marking this a WONTFIX because the act of doing this would cause
the clipboard to get wiped out if the user has something important on it.

I think this could be implimented alongside cut/copy/paste and not get in the
way of normal clipboard use.

Could you explain how? If not, I'm afraid I'm going to have to close this
bug again.

Please remember that when the user copies text in Nautilus it's placed on
the X clipboard, therefore if a file is selected as you describe it would wipe
out the data that gets pasted on a middle click. It's also not acceptable to
have the clipboard temporarily change to hold he contents of the selected
files, then change back once they're no longer selected. Finally,
remember that there's always at least one file selected inside of Nautilus.
If there are no files in a folder selected, that parent folder is object that
hold the selection focus.

(Sory, I wasn't being very clear.)
Here's the behaviour I am now suggesting:
Select a bunch of files, then do ctrl+c. That would put the full path to every
selected file in the clipboard.
That way you could copy a bunch of files, then paste them (with the mouse) into
a terminal window.

Since this would be an explicit copy rather than just a selection as I
originally suggested, you wouldn't have the problem of Nautilus continually
overwriting the clipboard.
