Description Joona Palaste 2007-09-18 15:29:22 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I recently quit my former job but did not remove the company's IMAP mail account from Evolution. After the administration shut down the IMAP mail account and I started up Evolution, it tried in vain to access this account, presenting me with a login window. No matter what I did to this login window, it kept coming back. As the window is modal, I can't edit any other Evolution settings while it is active. There is no way to say "No, I don't want to use this account, it's gone, it's history, it's not pining for the fjords, it is an EX-ACCOUNT!". Evolution is completely locked up.
In the end I managed to remove the account by shutting down gconfd, manually removing the entry from .gconf/apps/evolution/mail/%gconf.xml, and restarting Evolution.
This is a really frustrating problem as it makes Evolution unusable if this situation occurs. I must have spent fifteen minutes searching for the fix, and a Linux newbie would have given up hope, as the solution is really arcane.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Set up an IMAP account in Evolution.
2. Get rid of access to that IMAP account (for example, having the administration shut it down).
3. Restart Evolution.

Actual results:
Evolution locks up in a never-ending cycle of login windows. It can't be used for anything, or even quit - the process has to be killed by force.

Expected results:
Evolution should have offered me a way of simply forgetting about that account.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

well, start evolution in offline mode by running "evolution --offline". then you can disable the account in the preferences.

this will be fixed when bug 312106 is fixed.
