GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 477898
Provide feedback for application startup
Last modified: 2018-03-08 09:13:00 UTC
Application startup from a desktop icon or other kind of buttons provides no feedback at all. For small apps you can just wait a little. Big apps usually display a splash screen. But the desktop itself shows nothing. I think some kind of clear standard feedback should be given to the user to confirm that his click or double click had an effect. The activated icon could be higlighted for a couple of seconds or other visual/audio effects could be used. Single click provides feedback selecting the element. Double click does not have a special feedback to confirm. This can be mostly useful for unexperienced users that easily give two single clicks instead of a double click. This same idea could be generalized to many other contexts. Bye Lorenzo
Note that the icon is changed to the "waiting" one.
Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 91362 ***
This bug has been marked as duplicate of #91362 while I think they are orthogonal: - #477898 is about providing immediate visual feedback even when everything goes well (for example changing the cursor into a spinner). - #91362 is about being more helpful when something goes wrong (for example providing an error message if the launch fails). I also think that this bug is not specific to Nautilus as no visual feedback is provided either when starting an application from a desktop launcher, the Applications menu, or the activities overview.
