I extensively use the paths tool, and find that it is very good until you come to the point where you wish to background-color fill your path. At that point you have to turn the path into a selection, and then fill the selection. Which wastes a lot of time.

It would be nice to have a background fill option which will fill your path with your current background color. It would basically work the same as turning the path into a selection, then background filling it, only, much more efficient. It is also important to have your path still there, so that you can do things like fill with the background color and then stroke the path to put a line around the edge.

If you've used the paths tool as much as I do, you'd understand how important it is to have this feature. I have another small request for the paths tool as well, but at the moment, having the ability to background fill the path is most important in order to make the paths tool useful for most people.

Thank you very much, I really hope someone will pick up this feature request.

This boils down to bug #68915. Should probably be closed as a duplicate.
Comment 2 Jose Martins 2007-09-17 06:46:16 UTC
I really do not see how wanting a background-color fill option for the paths tool is related to bug #68915... Yes, both are related to the paths tool, and I do agree with the points made in #68915, but this is a completely different request.

I do not want my path to be a selection - in fact, on an unclosed path this may not even be a good idea, that aside, what I feel is needed is a background color fill option on the UI for the paths tool. What I am trying to move away from is having to turn my path into a selection before I am able to fill the path with a certain color. I want to be able to create a path, click a button, and it's filled with my background color.

So the UI would have "Stroke path" and "Fill with b/g color" as buttons/options. Please read the feature request again and if you have any questions, I'll answer to the best of my abilities.

In general enhancement requests should be discussed on the mailing-list before they are added to our bug-tracker. We need to make sure that only bug reports that fit into the bigger picture are being added. And to me it seems that this request is best fulfilled by the vector layer work which has been done as part of the GSoC last year. You are right that it could be easily solved by adding yet another menu option but this would only clutter the UI and it would not be in line with the plans that we have for the path tool. Please move this discussion to the mailing-list.

I am sorry for putting it in the wrong place. Could you please move it to the mailing list for me as I am not sure how to do this.

Since the status is set to needing more information, I will provide as much as I can (including an example):
Currently, the only tool options available on the UI is: Stroke path, and Create selection from path.

Afterwards, it would also have a Fill with background color option.

Coming from a Photoshop background, this is the only path-related feature that I truly feel is missing. There really needs to be a simple, single click way to fill a path with a background color (or a shortcut-key to do so). An example of the kind of thing this is useful for is provided below: http://www.freewebtown.com/raziel/elfenlied1.png

I can't say I kept track of how many background fills that required, but the number is not small. Considering the simplicity of the trace above, I can say that anyone doing anything even half serious with paths would find a background fill option essential.

Unfortunately I do not know what plans you have for the paths tool, but I hope that this feature could be integrated into GIMP, and kept as a feature in those plans. If you truly feel this is not a useful request, please provide me with an alternative way to quickly fill my paths with my selected background color. It just seems like such a natural feature to have.

Again, as stated earlier, if more information is needed, I will try to help to the best of my abilities.

Thank you very much.

simple plugin filling path with BG

Ah, draw with FG fill with BG is a good workflow actually, I'll try it.

"Could you please move it to the mailing list for me as I am not sure how to do this." Do you not just post the relevant details -- your problem and your proposed solution -- to the gimp-developer mailing list and ask what people think about this?

Re: this plugin:
See the source code -- there is one option configurable there (whether you want the selection preserved or not.)
Installing this plugin should provide the function you want.
It could complete faster (esp. on Windows), it's still much faster than manual operation.

Note: I'm not convinced yet that there is a good reason to implement this in GIMP itself (which is an Image Manipulation program rather than a drawing program). I will use a variation of this plugin for my own work though.

It will take a while to figure out how this works, but it seems to be exactly what I need.

Thank you very much. Really appreciated.

I was trying to install this plug-in. After installation I tried to click on the fill path with bg button but nothing happens. I'm using ubuntu feisty fawn with gimp2.2.

It would be nice to implement this on gimp cause it reduces workload and this feature is not restricted to only drawing programs.
