GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 472828
Select by color does not work
Last modified: 2008-10-30 19:58:06 UTC
Please describe the problem: When I click on the tool "select by color" and then clicck on the picture to select a color ( in this case rose) to copy and paste this as a new layer and then to desaturate it to white, the picture freezes and I am unable to do do anything else but to close it: no copy, paste, undo is possible. The menu does even not appear... Steps to reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual results: Expected results: Does this happen every time? Other information:
Select by color works for me /me makes wild guess Do you have a slow computer and a huge image? Does it work on smaller images?
I work with Windows XP, downloaded the rc1 - and now rc2 - from Sourceforge, have ZoneAlarm and CA-antvirus. The problem occurs frequently, but not allways. In some photographs it happans always, for example in situation I mentioned in my bug-report: a photograph type JPG with 3 persons taken indoors where the shirts are rose instead of white. Another problem is that regularly I get the message from ZoneAlarm that Gimp is traying to access priviledged resources. ZoneAlarm asks me if I want to permit that. No matter if I say "Yes" or "Deny" the Gimp closes without saving anything of my work. I can't ignore the message of ZoneAlarm, because the Gimp freezes until I answered the question... I hope this is enough information, if not tell me please... J. Régal
My PC is fast enough: P4 3GH hyperthreading and I have enough memory: 2.5 GB. With Gimp 2.2.17 there was no such problem.
Does the problem still occur if you disable the antivirus and/or ZoneAlarm? Sounds as if those two could be the cause of this...
I just tried it several times with disabled ZoneAlarm and snoozed antivirus. Mostly the same problem reappears, but once I was able to copy the selection and to paste, but the layer did not show the selection I made but only some areas I did not select by color... J. Régal
It would be useful to see what GIMP does when it freezes, i.e. run GIMP in a debugger and break at freeze-time to see what it does at that point.
The debugger doesn't work in the windows-version of Gimp rc2!
I have never debugged GIMP under windows myself, but I would be very surprised if it was impossible...
