GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 471358
Why backgrounds and colours?
Last modified: 2010-08-02 12:20:04 UTC
What's the background and colours window good for? Why would a user want to change the background of a specific folder? It might be a good idea to think about removing the dialogue, even if the emblems stay.
Yay! A bug report asking for a 'feature' to be removed. Confirming with utmost enthusiasm.
I fully agree that they are not really useful. If I had to speculate why the feature is there, I'd say it has to do with the spatial paradigm in spatial mode. When a window is interpreted like a physical object and is directly linked with a directory, and you have tons of windows open at the same time, it may be a useful mental model for fast distinguishing between the supposedly physical objects. It doesn't make much sense in browser mode, where you can only have a unique background for all windows anyways, though.
So, it should be removed then?
Yeah, we did this :)
