Description Pedro Villavicencio 2007-08-16 02:34:52 UTC
This bug has been filled here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-monitor/+bug/132672

"Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

In Preferences->processes there is an option "Solaris Mode" which has no tool tip or help documentation. My guess is this doesnt even make sense on a linux system and should be removed, or restated/documented to actually make sense."

Nobody ever answered me.
Comment 2 Martin Ejdestig 2007-11-22 03:13:45 UTC
I'd go for the first and third option... :)
Comment 3 Sebastien Bacher 2008-10-10 08:11:32 UTC
the bug doesn't really need informations reopening
Comment 4 Vincent Untz 2009-03-04 16:21:18 UTC
The documentation seems to be okay now, but the third option should still be implemented, IMHO?

Patch to replace 'Solaris mode' checkbox with combo box with descriptive labels

I noticed this checkbox today and found it a bit baffling. :)

Attached patch is flattened from my github fork:
https://github.com/brion/gnome-system-monitor/commits/alternate-solaris-mode

Replaces the "Solaris mode" checkbox with a combo box; the popup menu has two options with descriptive labels:

  "Calculate CPU percentage per core"
"Calculate CPU percentage across all cores"

I've also tweaked the base English help file to match.

Do feel free to come up with better wording!

Review of attachment 179061 [details] [review]:

I don't think it's necessary to have a drop-down. And I'm not convinced "Calculate CPU percentage across all cores" stands alone well. See bug comment for my intentions regarding this.
Comment 7 Chris Kühl 2011-03-04 22:10:10 UTC
I'm very much in favor of replacing "Solaris mode" for something more
descriptive. I'm strongly considering changing it to "Divide CPU percentage by
CPU count."

I'd like to get some feedback about this before committing before the string
freeze.
Comment 8 Chris Kühl 2011-03-04 23:04:43 UTC
Hmm, or maybe "Divide CPU load by CPU count" or "Divide CPU usage by CPU count." Any preference?

The following fix has been pushed:
3307a76 Make 'Solaris mode' option be more descriptive.
