GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 463509
Content: "New developers" misses the point and contains outdated links
Last modified: 2012-11-18 18:38:24 UTC
The core mission of http://gnome.jardigrec.eu/en/get-started/new-developers is to point developers to the right first steps in order to start developing GNOME applications and/or contributing to existing projects. I'm a developer: convince me to use your development platform and to work in your project. This is totally missing in the current text. Besides, most of the links point to developer.gnome.org, that is obsolete today and will be totally deprecated by the 2.20 release. We can't release the site with a page like this. Someone with a good knowledge of the developer tools and needs should start almost from scratch. As soon as someone picks this responsibility I can help refining the mission of this page (additional use cases that need to be satisfied here).
We should probably change the Developer link at the top pointing from developer.gnome.org to live.gnome.org as well.
Thanks for the reminder. However, library.gnome.org won't be a pure substitute of developer.gnome.org and won't be linked directly from that "Development" tab in the top GNOME navigation bar. Thanks for the reminder, I have filed a new bug to remake the home of dgo according to the plans: The main page needs update according to the wgo revamp http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=463693
Sorry, I meesed up "lgo" stuff, since you talked about live, not library. Well, in any case the answer is the same. :) "Development" covers a lot more than lgo and therefore we need a more generic page to map all that.
So this is for 3rd party developers (ISVs) rather than about people wanting to hack on GNOME itself? If so, would you be content with an introductory paragraph and some links to library.gnome.org, particularly the Platform Overview document.
Yes, this page belongs to the "Get Started" sections and targets developers starting to know about the platform and considering it for their work. Developers willing to get hack GNOME itself should be pointed to the "Get Involved" default page, in our current structure.
The text is now suitable for that aim: http://gnome.jardigrec.eu/en/get-started/new-developers though it should be more persuasive. I'd like to add a link to http://gnome.jardigrec.eu/en/get-started/new-developers, but I don't know how to add a link to pages in Plone without hard-coding a particular translation.
Since translation trees are not set up yet, maybe we should hard-code links for now, and deal with this later ?
Hm. Is this still a problem?
No, that web site / system was never used.
