GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 458462
File > New > OK causes immediate hard crash
Last modified: 2008-01-15 13:29:05 UTC
For Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, fully patched as of 19 July, 2007. - 1 GB RAM, 2 gHz P4, plenty of hard disk, etc. After upgrading to The GIMP 2.2.17 I became unable to create a new, blank document. Steps to create: 1. Use Windows shortcut to open The GIMP 2.2.17. GIMP displays the toolbar window. 2. In the toolbar window, select File > New. GIMP displays the "Create a New Image" dialog box. 3. In the "Create a New Image dialog box, choose any template, or simply click OK. GIMP tries to create the new image, but after less than one second the new image window disappears. GIMP then displays a "Program Error" message: "gimp-2.2.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows". The error message automatically disappears after a few seconds. I have a Dr. Watson log and a couple of screenshots that I'll try and add to this bug report. Cheers, thanks, & hope this helps, Ric SFO
Created attachment 92010 [details] "Clean" Dr. Watson log of GIMP crash. I deleted my existing Dr. Watson logfile and ran The GIMP so that I believe the log file contains only the GIMP crash and no other superfluous information...(?)
Created attachment 92011 [details] Image of Create Image dialog box that produces crash. After using "File > New" to display the Create Image dialog box, *any* new image specifier can be used to produce the immediate hard crash. I merely supplied this as a way of illustrating the use-case that's producing the error.
Created attachment 92012 [details] Screenshot of error message. This screenshot is the error message I receive immediately after GIMP 2.2.17 crashes while trying to create a new image.
Additional notes: I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling 2.2.17 and rebooting afterwards, but the error is identical throughout. In an attempt to perhaps remedy the problem, I also identified gimp-2.2.exe as a trusted executable to my Kaspersky Internet Security program. This produced no change in the crash behavior.
Hey, I just discovered something else interesting: IF I use File > New to open the "Create Image" dialog box, THEN click Cancel, I also get the immediate crash. So it's something pertaining to the "Create Image" dialog box, at least on my computer...(?) Note, too, that I can select an image file, right-click it, and use The GIMP to open that file. So in my case, it seems to be something *specifically* pertaining to the "Create Image" d'box. Cheers, thanks, & hope this helps, Ric SFO
What version of GTK+ are you using? Where did you get it from? Do you have GAIM nstalled?
Okay, the question about GTK+ led immediately to the answer. I just finished installing GTK+ 2.10.13 for Win32 (followed by a precautionary re-install of GIMP 2.2.17). That allows me to once again successfully use the Create Image dialog box. The associated question about Gaim seems to refer to the fact that Gaim requires a "no higher than" version of GTK+. At least I assume that's the case insofar as Gaim now doesn't work. This is, of course, a separate issue I'll be taking up elsewhere. Anyhow, GIMP 2.2.17 is now working... Cheers & thanks, Ric SFO
